Introduction

This course provides practical and technical skills required to become a pipe layer in the civil construction industry. Pipe layers install underground pipes on major infrastructure projects such as highways, dams and the drainage or airfield and sub-divisions. These pipes may be constructed from steel, concrete or plastic and are used for storm water, sewerage, water supply and gas pipelines that may extend many hundreds of kilometres.

Introduction

This course provides a detailed introduction to the design and construction of road surfaces, with a focus on asphalt and spray sealing. It demystifies the terminology used in the industry and provides an overview of all matters associated with bituminous surfacing for people with limited exposure to the industry. It provides participants with a solid foundation on which to build their knowledge as they progress through the industry.

Introduction

Numerous claims are laid against road authorities every year for vehicle damage caused by potholes and even for serious vehicle accidents resulting from excessively large potholes. Potholes have always been a problem on sealed/paved roads. This course will enable participants to have skills and knowledge on how to;

  • Resurface damaged bituminous road layers.

Assembling and tie-ing reinforcing cages and using the correct materials and methods for fixing reinforcing must be done in a safe and efficient manner. This course will enable learners to demonstrate knowledge of types of tools, equipment and personal protective equipment, Steel fixing sequence and SABS requirements for the different types of ties.

  • Checking work area for hazards.
  • Checking scaffolding for adequacy.
  • Identifying and preparing reinforcing material.
  • Preparation of spacing templates.
  • Fixing reinforcing.
  • Securing all ties.
  • SABS requirements for the different types of ties to be used for given situations and types of bars.
  • Techniques for preparing spacing templates.
  • Occupational Health and Safety requirements for the erection of scaffolding (size and positioning).
  • Techniques for identifying faults to base and starter bars.
  • Safety precautions in reinforcing.
  • consequences of good and poor workmanship are described in terms of production, cost, safety and quality of product

Introduction

This course will enable learners to conduct priming and painting tasks on building surfaces. The skills, values and knowledge reflected in this programme are required by people in the field of building and civil construction.

Successful completion of this course will enable learners to plaster surfaces. The skills, values and knowledge reflected in this programme are required by people in the field of building and civil construction.

Introduction

At the end of the short course learners will be able to fabricate, erect and strip steel and timber formwork for straight walls, columns and bases in accordance with working drawing specifications, National Building Regulations and safety legislation ensuring that client requirements for cost-effective and quality products are met within the prescribed timeframes.

Key learning Areas

  • Prepare the work area where the formwork is to be fabricated.
  • The formwork is fabricated in accordance with the safety requirements of the workplace.
  • Formwork is fabricated and completed in accordance with work schedules.
  • Formwork panels are correctly marked or numbered as instructed.
  • Compliance with issued instructions is checked and the correctness of markings or numbering is confirmed.
  • Scaffolding is thoroughly checked and confirmed to be adequately constructed for the task in terms of size, position and in accordance with the requirements of the OHSA.
  • The correct shuttering materials are identified, prepared for use and safely stacked at the work area in readiness for the task at hand.
  • The erected formwork is neat, true to line, plumb and in accordance with specified dimensions and within the specified SABS tolerances.
  • Formwork is stripped in accordance with specified curing requirements.
  • Personal protective equipment is used in accordance with the requirements of the OHSA.

Introduction

This short skills programme will be useful to people who work in the civil construction industry. People credited with this unit standard are able to prepare bedding, assemble and complete gabion baskets.
